Cat food for the chickens

Posted on December 28, 2012 at 7:22 PM Comments comments (0)
After moulting our hens haven't restarted laying and it's been quite a while now.  The production of feathers after the moult puts extra demands on their bodies, they cease laying as feather production is more of a necessity than egg production.  Normally, this spontaneously restarts but ours hasn't.  I really don't want to buy supermarket eggs as even the free range eggs look weirdly uniform.  So I need to stimulate their laying.  I don't want to go down the artificial lighting route as that seems a little too intense for our girls. After a little research it seems that a little extra protein in the form of cat food (very high in protein) might be enough to give them a boost.
Cat food for the chooks starts tomorrow......

Laughing dogs

A really enjoyable walk with our young pup client and my own dog.  The puppy really loves Sunshine and the feeling is mutual.
They were playing with each other in the woods today and it was lovely to watch them grinning at each other and I could actually hear them making noises that was really similar to laughing.
Lovely when dogs are a well socialised from a early age like this.

House Rabbit Guest

We are really enjoying the company of our house rabbit guest.  We have slowly built up a trusting relationship with him and he continues to enjoy a stress free home from home experience.
He enjoys watching tv with us and we like it too.  His owners very sweetly left him a christmas present.  We opened it for him on Christmas Day with our own, so he has had a couple of christmas treats but not too many!

Positive comments from people in the park

I was really proud and pleased today when I was walking one of my special needs dog's today.  A local man who we pass whilst out walking every now and again, stopped to comment on the dog in question and was full of praise for the changes in the dog.  He said how much the dog had improved since I started walking him and how noticeable the changes in the dog's behaviour are.
This was very welcome praise indeed and I was over the moon that all these little changes are coming together.  The obvious bonus is a much happier dog.
It is also very nice when other people in the park understand a dog wearing a muzzle might have special needs and just need a little more space and understanding than the average dog.

Client Christmas present shopping complete

I had fun today choosing client Christmas presents, thinking about the likes and dislikes of each pet.  Great fun, I can't wait to deliver them, which will be sooner rather than later as my own pet is showing a lot of interest in them.

The cold weather is here - water watch

When checking your outdoor animals please ensure that your animal has adequate protection from the cold and wind.
Remember that access to fresh water is vital for their health and welfare.  Even if you have insulated bottle protectors make sure that the drip nozzle isn't frozen.  I routinely check ours twice a day.

Puppy Days

We are enjoying the care of a young puppy called Muffin.  He is quite the little character and full of fun and energy.
It is lovely watching this puppy develop and grow week on week.  It is so fulfilling helping with his training and socialising experiences.

It's been a while....

Well, it's all been very busy here and I'm afraid the blog spot suffered somewhat. A promise to rectify that.
One of our most sensitive dog walking clients is make amazing progress.  This young fella requires very special handling and wears a muzzle.  He is a very lovely young dog, he is just very, very frightened.  I am so impressed by his owners' commitment and dedication to this fella.  They rescued him and have no idea as to what this poor dog has endured. I shudder to think.
This young dog is very, very slowly learning that everything is out there to hurt him.  It's is very rewarding working with this dog and his owners.

Adding to our little flock.

We have just added 2 new hens to our little group of Warrens.  We got a Light Sussex pullet and a Silver Sussex pullet.  They have been named Colin and Tiny by the children!  They are beatiful, happy and healthy girls.
We got them from a small holding couple in Skipton (  The couple were lovely, clearly very fond of their hens and incredibly knowledgeable, not to mention patient with me and my two boys.
The chooks seem to be settling in nicely with the other 3 (Dimples, Mellow and Freaky Beaky).

Our middle aged guest, is too cute! He is surprisingly more nimble than his waistline would suggest :)
Another guest we are totally in love with.
He was given a locust bean yesterday and it only tooks seconds for him to sniff it out from where I'd hidden it for him to find.
